(1) Market middlemen (Distributors)

The main function of the middlemen is to take the products of the company to the final customer. The distribution process of the products is done through various middlemen. Agents and traders are included in these middlemen. These middlemen help the company to store its products at a particular place and also help to distribute the goods at various places. They are also helpful in fixing the market aims through various processes of marketing. The market middlemen include advertising agencies, market research firms, consulting firms, money landers, couriers, insurance agents etc.

If the selection of the middlemen is done in improper way, then it will affect adversely on the sale. So the comparative consideration has to be done of the matters like various middlemen of the market, their reliability, regularity, various services connected with marketing provided by the middlemen, their commission etc. while framing the distribution strategy.

(2) Suppliers

The suppliers of the company include the people supplying the raw materials, machinery, spare parts, fuel etc. It is a fact that the extent to which the suppliers are prestigious and reliable, to that extent the working of the business becomes easy and effective.

If the supply is irregular, then the products have to be stored. The business units in India are keeping the stock of 3 to 4 months. While in Japan the stock of 2 to 4 hours or mostly of week is maintained. The number of controls on the supplier creates the irregularity in the matter of supply. By keeping this fact in mind many times the retailers are given more importance. If the supply is available from only one person, then many times terrible situation is created. In these circumstances if the suppliers go on strike or close down their business or any other problem takes place then it can adversely affect the company’s production continuity.

Besides this in the situation of scarcity the suppliers also don’t leave the chance of taking improper advantage of their monopoly. Due to this it is more advantageous to get the supply from more than one unit. In short, during the formation of strategy the matters to be considered are quantity of supply, number of suppliers, price, regulations, their distribution centres and the distance between the business and the supplier, transport facility etc.

While thinking about the competitors, the competition among the producers of some products is considered. This thought is considered narrow-minded now. In reality all the producers are trying to attract the saving of the customers towards their products and in this way all the producers become the competitors of one another, e.g. out of the limited saving any person can purchase only one product. In these circumstances the producers of IV, washing machine, refrigerator, audio-video, scooter, grinder machine etc. are trying to attract the customers so that they should purchase these products.

If the demand of the customer for more than one product is not satisfied then the producers become the competitors of one another. If the customer wants to purchase the T.V., then all the producers of the T.V. sets become the competitors of one another. On this stage also various financial companies are trying, attract the people to save and invest in their company. In these circumstances the Unit Trust Banks, Financial Companies and deposits accepting other companies also become the competitors of one another.

Even if the customer finalizes to purchase the TV, then also of which company and which brand he wants to buy, this question arises. This means that brand competition also, should be considered. In short, the producers must try to create a primary demand for their own products.

To form the strategy without the knowledge of the competitors is just like to jump in a chakravyooh as Abhimanyu did. In these circumstances the complete success becomes impossible or difficult. The executive must form the proper resistant strategy by analyzing their own strength and weaknesses in context to the strength of the competitors.

Various factors are affecting present operating position of the business. These factors are also known as competitive environment as they are affecting the competitive position of the company. The factors are not under control of executives. Even if the strategy is formed by keeping each factor in the centre carefully, then control can be kept on these factors up to some extent. Among these factors, following factors are said to be most important:

Customer’s profiles
To make the customers and maintain them, this is the main work of the company. There is no doubt that if the customers will get satisfaction, then only the business will exist. For this the various matters of the customers must be considered carefully.

The various types of customers of the company include individuals, household industries, trade organizations, service oriented organizations and government, e.g. The customers of the tyre company are the individual motor drivers, motor producers, transport companies and government’s public companies.

It is dangerous to keep the base on one type of customers because if these customers turn to the other business, then they are lost. Not only is this but it even not possible to get a high price from the remaining customers. It is desirable to keep more than one customer but while selecting the customers the factors like profitability, number of competitors, stability of demand, reliability, possibility of development etc. are to be considered.

The geographical information like in which area do customers using the particular brand of product and in how much quantity, is necessary to form the strategy. The particular brand of toothpaste, masala, ice-cream, soaps etc. are famous in a particular area. This information is very important.

Political environment includes matters like government policies, government rules, control, political changes etc. The government of all the countries mostly forms the rules and regulations to protect the interests of the people of the country. If the production is not done according to the standards fixed by the government, then necessary steps are taken against the producers. In the country Libiya, there is a restriction on advertisements also. While in India according to the MR.TP. Act monopolistic, prohibited and unlawful activities are kept under control. Because of the government’s present policy of liberalization the opportunities for industrial development have taken place, but along with them many small scale units have to face the competition.

While forming the business strategies the executives have to consider the following political steps :

(1) Control over pollution. (2) Control over taxation. (3) Control over foreign exchange rates. (4) Control over the situation of monopoly. (5) Rates for unfavorable business manners and customs. (6) Provisions for customers’ protection. (7) Provisions for the protection of investors. (8) Labor laws.

Political environment also gives the encouragement to research activities. Besides this due to the Patent and Trade mark Act, its proprietor gets the economic protection. To establish the industries in the backward areas the government also helps economically. The government also gives some industries, the freedom from sales tax, customs and octroi. To get all these advantages also the study of political environment becomes necessary. It is favorable to consider the following three types of roles of government while forming the strategy:

(a) Government as a customer: The government is working for the welfare of the people and for this it needs various medicines, materials for construction, various types of fuel etc. on a large scale. The government is actively doing the purchasing according to government rules according to its requirements. State government is doing its own purchasing through central stores of purchase organization. While the central government is doing its purchasing through DGSD i.e. ‘Director General of Supplies Disposal’. Due to this the company must try to get its name registered in these centres.

(b) Government as a supplier : The ownership of the natural resources lying in the earth, rivers, oceans, mountains and jungles, minerals, trees etc. ownership is of government. The distribution of these things is done according to the planning done for development. In the service providing industries like post & telegram, railway, air and ocean transportation etc., the government has a monopoly. The distribution of the basic necessary items and food grains is done by the government through “Fair rate shops”. These all matters also should be taken into consideration while forming the strategy.

(c) Government as a competitor: In various activities the government appear as a large competitor e.g. State transport buses in competition with the private luxury buses, post & telegraph services against private angadia services, government schools & colleges in competition with private schools & colleges, government milk distribution centres against the private milk distribution centres, government gas companies against private gas companies etc. In these various activities the government is like a competitor. To stay in the competition, the private units have to maintain a quality, price and regularity of the supply.

The social and cultural factors include traditions, customs and beliefs of the people, language, values, purchasing habits, arrangement of social families etc. To get the estimate of the demand of the product, it becomes necessary to analyses these factors. Due to these matters, Hindustan Lever Limited has produced various types of soaps that give the qualities like beauty, health, smell, shining, protection to the hair etc.

In the Hindu society, the non-vegetarian products are not accepted. Besides this if the product is placed in the market after considering the local customs and festivals, then that product gets a warm welcome. At the times of marketing of the product like gutkha, masala, tobacco etc. the social and cultural factors become important.

As and when changes in social factors take place its demand also gets changed, e.g. As the member of working women is increasing, the demand for readymade food materials cosmetic products, two wheeler vehicles and also the demand for the quick kitchenware like pressure cooker, oven, roti maker etc. has increased. As the social education and awareness have increased, the use of medicines and power tonics for children has also increased.

This includes the countries’ economic condition, economic policies, and stages of development, per capita income, and nature of economy, independence of holding the properties, interest rate, and inflation rate. As the per capita income in the undeveloped countries is low, the proportion of demand is also low accordingly. Besides this due to fewer saving it is difficult to get the industrial capital.

The country in which the proportion of income, saving and investment is high, there the chances of business development are more. In the developed countries as most of the basic requirements are fulfilled, the special selection about new investment is not done. Besides this the industries which are considered advantageous for the public by the government of the country, those industries can only get the facilities for development. Besides this by considering the policies of the government to maintain regional equilibrium and for decentralization of property, the attitude for establishment of industries in a particular area can be seen.

The agreements between two countries at international level and the union of the countries producing one type of product affect notably economic activities, e.g. Union of the countries exporting petroleum products OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). This type of unions cans economic trouble in various countries by increasing the price or controlling the supply of the products.

The business environments are considered responsible for the success or failure of the business. Because of this its proper analysis and budget must be made with the help of the analysis of various environments affecting the business The executives establish the operational relation and can take the proper decision for future business activities Because of this type of decisions the business unit is able to fight against the possible uncertainties maintain its existence and stay in the business competition so in present time it has become more acceptable to consider the scientific study of environment affecting the business. This matter is considered more necessary for strategic management also.

Environmental analysis is such a process in which strategic managers consider economic position, government advantages, market competition, method of supply and geographical and social structure. Through this they determine the opportunities and consider the risk factors against the firm.

For taking the strategic decisions the environmental analysis is considered as precondition. For the development and progress of the business, this matter is considered necessary. In present time for the decision process SWOT Analysis (Strength, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) is used. Through this by getting the idea of strength weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the unit, the proper and effective decisions are taken. This type of analysis is considered inevitable. Philip Kotler also first describes the marketing environment audit in marketing audit.

As the success of any person depends upon the extent to which he can maintain the relations of his personal qualities and skill with the environment. In the same way the success of the business is based on the extent to which the relation between its own production resources e.g. man power, capital, machinery etc. and environment can be developed.

Environment affecting business: Various factors are affecting the business activities. Many factors are affecting in long-term while many factors affect the business in present time only. These factors can be studied in two ways as follows:

Remote environment:
The factors that effect the activities of the company in long-term are said to be remote environment. This environment creates opportunities risks or control for the company e.g. Technical research makes the present technology obsolete in the long-run. e.g. Diesel engine in place of steam engine, in the printing business, offset machines in the place of treadle and cylinder machines, ballpen in the place of fountain pen. T.V. in the place of radio, computer in the place of typewriter etc. In short, due to remote environment, present products are getting out one by one and new products are getting entry.

Following are some main remote factors:
(1) Economic environment / considerations.
(2) Social and cultural environments.
(3) Political environments.
(4) Technological environments

We are an extremely adaptive species. We are constantly evolving and maintaining our balance and harmony. This process is constant. For example, in the tropics on a hot, sunny day, we sweat profusely. In extremely cold weather, we shiver. The endocrine and nervous systems are primarily involved in mediating the manner in which our body makes certain small, subtle adjustments. This is called homeostatic balance. The outcome of this reaction is presented in the form of symptoms, the basis of homeopathic treatment.

There are scores of people who suffer from excessive sweating — for no real reason — in summer, or winter. Excessive sweating is called hyperhidrosis — it highlights sweating that is far beyond what the body, on an average, needs. Most people who suffer from excessive sweating are often normal — although some may be anxious, or restless, and more than lacking in terms of self-confidence. Excessive sweating often creates a stigma — with one’s damp, dripping hands, feet and arm-pits. It makes the sweaty individual “freeze” before a handshake, or uncomfortable at the workplace, or during social interaction.

Homeopathy looks at the type of sweating and its unique nature. Not just sweating in isolation. It aims at understanding the cause. For example, excessive sweating, in a sensitive individual, may be due to extreme anxiety, or apprehension of an approaching event, a job-interview, or something one can’t comprehend. The fact is the trigger exists somewhere, deep inside the body and mind. This is a key area a professional homeopath would analyse while treating the sweaty distress.

The homeopathic medicine, Silicea, for example, is most useful in individuals who are visibly hypersensitive and suffer from foot sweats with an extremely foul odour. Acidum Hydrofluoricum is, likewise, useful in individuals who have excess sweating of palms and feet, but feel better in cool, open air, or under a ceiling fan. Calcarea Carbonica is effective in overweight individuals, presenting with symptoms of profuse, uncontrolled sweating. Salvia Officinalis is a handy remedy in generalised, excessive sweating. Iodum is useful in excessive sweating in humid conditions. It suits individuals who constantly try to keep themselves cool. Jaborandi, in its mother tincture form, is also useful in copious sweating.

Homeopathy has long recognised that merely diagnosing an illness is not everything, though this is an important constituent. The reason is simple. Have we not seen patients waiting to be diagnosed for conventional medical treatment to begin — and, precious time being lost in the process? Is this also not a factor that can make, or break, treatment outcomes — a choice between living well and being burdened by an illness without a name?

Homeopathy appreciates the value of medical and clinical diagnostics, all right. But, it lays equal emphasis on the many subtle levels, or modes, of illnesses represented through symptoms — the language of all illnesses — before illnesses becomes apparent. For conventional medicine, an illness is simply an illness. For homeopathy, it is more than what presents on the surface. This is primarily because our body is a smart apparatus. It is adept at revealing delicate and subtle signals when things go even a wee bit wrong.

Computerised tomography (CT) scans, a huge modern advance, can certainly detect deviations in our body, including tumours. They also carry an element of awe, a psychological “threat” — going through a machine. They expose patients to large amounts of radiation — this can increase the risk of cancer. Experts suggest that CT scans should not be casually used for screening purposes, or to look at something the physician already knows. Another downside of advanced, or sophisticated tests, CT scans, or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), is: interpretations can be ambiguous. This can lead to a diagnostic dilemma. The scene is now predictable. “Oh, this is bad. Something has gone ‘unexpectedly’ wrong. We will try to figure this out and correct the problem soon.”

Homeopathy pre-empts illnesses taking a bad turn by treating patients on the basis of their unique, or distinctive, symptoms — not just the diagnosis of the illness. This is done by analysing their pattern of presentation, which gives cues as to what the illness could be, followed by the safe use of small quantities of a suitable homeopathic remedy that closely resembles the individual’s symptom-picture. This provides the gentle stimulus for the body to beat illnesses from the inside-out — before they become bothersome, or serious.
